PROSPECT SPOTLIGHT 2025, SHORTSTOP: Angel Genao

Angel Genao signed with the Cleveland Guardians for $1.18 Million out of the Dominican Republic in January of 2021. Listed at 5’9”, 150 lbs, Genao is in many ways the prototypical Cleveland Guardians middle infield prospect. There are flashier names in the Guardians system like Chase DeLauter, 2024 #1 overall pick Travis Bazzana, and Jaison Chourio, but Genao showed a discerning eye at the plate, as well as a combination of contact and speed to go along with above-average defensive ability in his first three years in pro ball that he entered 2024 as an intriguing prospect.

Genao exceeded expectations in 2024 after beginning the year at single-A, hitting a robust .341 with six home runs and 12 steals in 44 games for the Lynchburg Hillcats. The six home runs were the most eye-opening stat for the 20-year-old Dominican as the improved ability to get to power in games was a new and very promising development. Genao’s domination in single-A earned him a promotion to high-A in early June, and the youngster really didn’t miss a beat. In 66 games for Lake County, Genao hit .322, with 4 more long balls and 13 steals, giving him a total of 10 home runs and 25 steals on the season.

When looking at player comparisons, I started at the shortstop position, thinking that it represents the best path for Genao to get to the big leagues as early as 2026. The problem is there aren’t many historical comparisons of shortstops who are 5’9”, and while we could look to Anthony Volpe and Cedanne Rafaela (the only starting shortstops in 2024 listed at that height), I came across another 5’9” player in my research, also from the Dominican Republic, that was too fun not to mention.

This player signed for just $50,000 and also came up through the minors as a hit-over-power middle infielder. In fact, he didn’t hit double-digit home runs in a season until his age 23 season when he hit 11 home runs and stole 22 bases in his first full season in the majors. Without holding you in suspense any longer, this mystery player is none other than the face of the Cleveland Guardians, José Ramírez.

Now I know what you’re thinking, and I want to be very clear that I’m not saying I think Angel Genao will be the next José Ramírez. It’s much more likely that Anthony Volpe presents a perfectly reasonable point of comparison. But there are enough differences between Genao and Volpe to suggest that there could be more there from the Dominican. For one, Genao has shown better contact rates through the minors than Volpe did at his age, and Volpe’s power through the minors and his first few years in the majors has been pretty consistent. Genao’s power growth in 2024, achieved without sacrificing his contact rates, suggests maybe there’s something more in store in 2025. Plus, part of the joy of evaluating prospects is in finding comparisons like these to dream on, and boy is this fun to dream on.

Coming back to reality, Genao projects to contribute more home runs than steals, and a 15-30 projection doesn’t seem out of the question as he continues to mature physically and continue to grow into his power. It’s likely the Guardians will see how long he can stick at shortstop, likely being flanked by Travis Bazzana at second base, and the aforementioned José Ramírez at third base. But maybe, just maybe, Genao can continue to develop his in-game power beyond the typical projections of his 5’9” frame. He’s certainly got a great role model in the organization to guide him.
