PROSPECT SPOTLIGHT 2025, SHORTSTOP: Sebastian Walcott
Sebastian Walcott signed as a 16-year-old out of the Bahamas for $3.2 Million in January of 2023, and the Rangers wasted no time putting the 6’4” shortstop to the test. Known for his loud tools, the biggest question surrounding the teenager was whether he’d make enough contact as he progressed through the minors. After just nine games in the Dominican Summer League in 2023, the Rangers brought Walcott stateside, where he showed enough contact ability, and showcased a combination of hard contact, power, and speed over 35 games, that immediately vaulted him up prospect rankings everywhere. Here at TDG, Walcott made it to number 11 in our 2024 shortstop prospect rankings after not cracking our top 30 for the position heading into 2023. And you’ve probably noticed that for 2025, we’ve got Walcott all the way up to number 3 on our list, which has everything to do with what he did in 2024.
The Rangers surprised everybody by assigning Walcott, who had just turned 18 in mid-March, to high-A Hickory to begin the 2024 season. To put that in context, most 18-year-old baseball players from the USA have yet to be drafted, and an assignment to single-A to begin the season is typically seen as a very tough assignment for someone Walcott’s age. When Walcott arrived in Hickory, NC he was more than 4 years younger than the average player at the level, and unsurprisingly he struggled to begin the season. In his first six games he managed just one hit in 21 at-bats, striking out 10 times. But after notching his first extra-base hit of the season, a triple, in the nightcap of a doubleheader on April 12th, the Bahamian teen simply put on a show the rest of the season. From April 13th onward, which includes a 5-game stint at double-A Frisco to close out the season, Walcott hit .275, with a .355 On Base Percentage and .468 Slugging Percentage, and accumulated 34 doubles, 8 triples, and 11 home runs to go along with 27 stolen bases. He also did this while striking out a reasonable 24.5% of the time.
There aren’t many historical examples of players accomplishing what Walcott accomplished in 2024, and the ones that do exist (you’ve probably heard of Juan Soto and Vlad Guerrero Jr.) place Walcott in truly rarified air, and on a trajectory to be one of the bright young stars of Major League Baseball within the next few years. Walcott will be just 19 years old when he begins the 2025 season, likely at Double-A, and it’ll be interesting to see how the Rangers handle the righty as the season progresses. If the past is any indication, the answer will be “aggressively” in terms of assignments, as they clearly know that Walcott needs to be challenged as much as possible on his path to the big leagues. If you can pry him away from his current owner in your dynasty league, this may be your last chance, although that ship has likely sailed at this point. The sky is truly the limit for Sebastian Walcott.
