The Top 500 Overall Dynasty League Ranks

So this is it. We’ve finally made it to the final day of the project. I hope it’s been a fun read — I certainly know it’s been a long one. After this post, it’ll be at 50,000+ words. Next week, it will be back to regular content, so if you’re one of the many new readers who found this site through the rankings project, I think you’ll enjoy sticking around once it’s over.

And as a final reminder, if you’ve enjoyed the series, please consider donating to the site if you can. I’ve received many donations so far, and am grateful for each and every one of them. When I started working on these rankings back in October, I had an idea of what I wanted it to look like, but it’s morphed into something even better (and more time consuming) than I had originally imagined. To donate, you can go here, or you can click on the “Donate” button at the top right-hand corner of the homepage.

Also, as promised, here is a downloadable Excel sheet with all of the rankings in one convenient place to take with you wherever you go:

What is the time horizon for these ranks?

    • February 19, 2013 at 2:21 pm

There’s no specific time horizon in mind. Just overall current value in a dynasty format of approximately 14-16 teams.

Dynasty (keep em forever) Draft with lots of help from your rankings. (14 team league) Think I can compete in 2014? Obviously not alot of other owners put much emphasis on acquiring minor league talent. Also, I have 6 rounds left with minor league talent such as Taijuan Walker, Javier Baez, and Taijuan Walker, while best major league talent would be Julio Teheran, Michael Pineda (we have a DL spot), Gordon Beckham and Stephen Drew. Anything obvious stand out to you as to what I should do? Thanks!!

Honestly, I think you may be able to compete with that roster this year, if your pitching breaks right. You definitely need more pitching, but Gio/Dickey is a great place to start. I would just grab reserves to plug in for the players who won’t start the season in the majors (Profar, Taveras, Cole, etc) and see how the season goes.

Do you have a rankings list of guys who are likely to get the callup this year and help fantasy teams? I like your rankings list but I am trying to find some top name guys that will contribute in a 12 team dynasty league with 28 total players on each roster. I know its difficult to determine when a player is coming up. Most of the big names like Profar, Hamilton, Miller, Wheeler are already taken. There are several on this list I see that are FA pool. Hope to hear from you soon!

    • February 26, 2013 at 4:58 pm

If you download the spreadsheet and filter by “Ready for the Show”, you can see the more impactful prospects you are likely to see this season.

I had to upload your document to google documents. Thanks for the great work you’ve done here! I love the site and you are becoming one of my favorite fantasy experts and I come to you before anyone for my main league which is my dynasty league.

First off, I love your rankings. Just wondering which spot Jimmy Rollins and Melky Cabrera should be ranked since you have them both listed twice.

So I just traded for Wil Myers in a dynasty league. In terms of floor and ceiling, which OFs would you compare him to?

    Thanks!

    • March 1, 2013 at 12:06 am

Thanks – for Rollins and Cabrera, the first placement is the correct one.

As far as Wil Myers, I think he’ll either be more of a Josh Willingham type (not so great average, pretty great power) or he’ll be a Billy Butler type (very solid average, decent power). If he puts it all together, maybe he can have a Matt Holliday type career. I just don’t believe he’ll be able to combine the high average and big power numbers at the same time in the majors.

    Great work!
Need an advice on who to keep…Latos or Bundy? Profar or Kipnis?

    • March 2, 2013 at 8:40 am

      Thanks!

In a keeper format where you have to choose, I’d go Latos. He’s pretty great in his own right and Bundy likely won’t contribute that much in 2013. Same with Kipnis vs Profar. Profar much better long-term, but without a job, Kipnis needs to be kept.

I am holding Olt in my dynasty league. Rendon just got dropped. Do u take Rendon over Olt? I am also taking into consideration who will be up first. I know both are blocked right now. I see Rendon is also killing it in spring training.

    • March 6, 2013 at 8:07 am

I think I would. Rendon might be a little further away, but there’s no guarantee that Olt will be in the majors before the second half – though he clearly has an easier path to playing time. All it would take is a Berkman/Beltre/Moreland injury, or just Moreland being ineffective.

So you feel Rendon’s ceiling is higher than Olt’s celing I assume? If so what type of line do you see Rendon at?

        • March 6, 2013 at 8:33 am

Yes, I think Rendon can essentially be Olt but with an extra 25 points of average. He’s capable of hitting .300 with 25 HR and a lot of counting stats because of his ability to get on base – it just comes down to the health risk with Rendon.

I was offered Giancarlo Stanton for Josh Hamilton and Oscar Taveras. Thoughts?

    • March 6, 2013 at 12:11 pm

I wouldn’t do that. Hamilton has his flaws, but he’s also still very valuable. Plus, you have the spot covered long-term with Taveras — not to mention the number of years you’ll be able to play them side-by-side.

I agree with that. The same guy offered me Starlin Castro and Xander Bogaerts for Hamilton and Taveras. He really wants Taveras but I could use a SS and my other OFs are Heyward, Holliday, and Bruce. Thoughts?

Want to know how crazy the guys in my league are? He wants McCutchen for Taveras + he said he wuld give me an upgrade. What upgrade i dnt even know. but i know hes not givin me Kershaw or CarGo his 2 best players. Oh wait he thinks Taveras is worth a first rounder so I guess that is his best player?

Would Wieters move up in a 2 C league? This list makes me have buyer’s remorse for taking at 68, ahead of machado, holliday, cliff lee, sale, myers and more.

    • March 7, 2013 at 9:31 am

Absolutely. All catchers would slide up in a 2C league. The position plays much differently there than in a 1C format.

What do you feel about Fujikawa? The potential closer for the cubs.

    • March 7, 2013 at 3:02 pm

Optimistic, but hesitant. Plus, I think this is Vizcaino’s job long-term. He could have a lot of success until teams figure him out though.

I noticed Rondon is not on this list also. Not a fan? Also do you update this throughout the preseason/season? or is it just a one time only update before the season. Also curious if you feel Hicks has pushed up his ranking a bit because of the hot spring training hes had.

        • March 8, 2013 at 1:01 pm

I am not a believer in Rondon, and I actually wrote more about this in an earlier post (which you should be able to find by searching his name – I can’t link to it since I’m on my phone.

The rankings are not going to be updates on an ongoing basis because its more disformative than informative. I don’t think more of Aaron Hicks because he hit a few wind-aided HRs yesterday in a spring training game – he’s still the same guy. Reacting to small samples and ST performances leads to bad decisions and bad analysis.

Do these rankings assume you can keep the player permanently at no cost (other than roster space)?

Hey what kind of ceiling do u see long term oscar tavares having if you compared him to a current MLB player. I was offered in our 20 team keeper league Evan longoria for tavares and Tommy Joseph. I should definately take this deal but my team is still 2 or 3 years away. So me trading for longoria would just be a plan to move him during the year. IWith tavares is 20 and should be in majors at 21 compared to evan longoria 28 already I have many more year of oscar tavares but I just wonder what mlb player is Tavares most likely to become.

    thanks

    • March 21, 2013 at 9:10 pm

The comp most often seen in terms of skillset is Vladmir Guerrero. He could be a .300+ hitter with 25-30 home runs. Given the state of your team (2-3 years away) and the goal of flipping Longoria, I don’t think you’re going to GET a better prospect than Taveras later on. I wouldn’t do that deal in your situation.

Dynasty Guru, my complements on all your good work here. I have been proposed the following trade.

    My Current Players:
    Freddie Freeman
    Carl Crawford
    For:
    Bryce Harper

I certainly would not Mind having Bryce Harper; I just feel he is overrated. I would love to get value for Carl Crawford. Freddie Freeman, really like this guys looking forward to a huge year from him.

    This is my current Roster:
    Travis d’Arnaud,Freddie Freeman,Jose Altuve,Mike Moustakas,Everth Cabrera,Andrew McCutchen,Shin-Soo Choo,Chris Davis,Brandon Belt,Carl Crawford,Wil Myers,
    Billy Hamilton,Anthony Rendon

    Stephen Strasburg,Chris Sale,Dylan Bundy,Bobby Parnell,Madison Bumgarner,Yu Darvish,James Shields,Gerrit Cole

    • March 24, 2013 at 3:55 pm

Thanks for the kind words. If you have a chance to get Harper in a dynasty format by giving up two players who are not stars, I’m absolutely doing it.

    • March 24, 2013 at 7:55 pm

I second Bret’s statement. I am a fan of Crawford, and less so of Freeman, but neither are stars. Harper has a chance to be a megastar on the level of Giancarlo Stanton when it comes to power, and he has more speed. Harper might not reach that level so soon, but he’s only 20. With no limits on players, I wouldn’t hesitate to accept that trade.

After some research I agree with you both. I will admit I am probably being too optimistic about Freeman… I have countered the deal to what I mentioned above Freeman/Crawford for Harper.
The original offer had pitchers in the deal also, he wants Shields and is giving me back Lincecum.
If he does not I am leaning towards offering him the original deal. Then I would try to trade Lincecum; if and when he goes on a hot streak. Any thoughts?

Offered Kyle Seager, Wil Myers and Starlin Castro for Miggy in my keeper league. Thoughts?

I am in a 20 team, 20 keeper dynasty league. Need your input as I am trying to compete for title in 2014.

As of now my projected SP for next year are: Strasburg, Jarred Cosart, Cashner, Garrett Richards with possibility of keeping Odorizzi/Luebke/Felix.

My main bats consist of: Pujols, Cano, HanRam, Granderson, Middlebrooks with top prospects in Taveras, d’Arnaud, Lindor, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Jorge Soler.

I was just offered Longoria/Grilli/Rienzo for Strasburg and Lindor. What should I do?

We play holds in addition to saves and right now my bullpen is Robertson, Kimbrel, and Soria. I lost Venters to DL and picked up Brian Wilson hoping he performs well end of 2013 and gets a gig next year.

    Thoughts?

Thanks, always love reading these lists; I know lots of hard work went into it.

I thought Paul Goldschmidt would be at least top 20, maybe cracking top 15 or top 10. As he is ranked right now (40th), it seems way too low. Below guys like Hosmer (who I like) and Profar (who hasn’t done a thing in MLB).

I also thought Castro at 12 was pretty odd given his recent disaster year.

Your comments are spot on, but this is last year’s list. The 2014 list will be out next week.

      • February 15, 2014 at 3:51 pm

I realized that after I left the comment 🙂 Feelin’ like a big noob haha. I tried looking for the date on the post and the title but didn’t see it anywhere. I was tipped off after reading the comments posted from a year ago! Looking forward to the new list!
