Prospect Spotlight: Cam Schuelke
Sometimes there’s a player that you get a live look at and you just get a child-like sense of joy just watching him play. That happened to me recently at a preseason game with Guardians 24 year old righty Cam Schuelke.
So what’s so exciting here about him? Let’s watch the full AB of Schuelke striking out Cam Collier
Notice anything significant from that AB?
For those of you who skipped past the video, the second pitch of the AB was thrown at a sidearm angle while the other three pitches were thrown as a submarine angle.
While Schuelke only demonstrated two arm slots in that video, in my live look he threw primarily out of the submarine arm angle, but also mixed in the sidearm and three-quarter slot angle to throw off hitters.
Now that is seriously cool!
Very few pitchers in the MLB have ever thrown from multiple arm slots. And of those that have, the “pitchers who vary their arm slot tend to have higher average arm angles than pure overhanders or three-quarter slotters”. The ability to throw from multiple different angles should be able to provide a unique form of deception for hitters because each pitch shape is vastly different.
From a player development standpoint, the biggest challenge for Schuelke to clear is going to be his consistency. Pitching motions with lower arm slots tend to be more complex than higher arm slots and these types of pitchers are more likely to struggle with command than pitchers with higher arm slots on average. Schuelke’s 3.9 BB/9 in 2025 is a reflection of this as he has to manage multiple arm slots.
Pitchers finding success by using multiple arm angles to mess with hitters has been done before in the case of late career Rich Hill, but without a repeatable delivery it may be more challenging for Schuelke to go five plus innings consistently. The best case scenario might look like a funky reliever who might get some appearances in a fireman like role in certain matchups if it all clicks. Between being a limited ceiling and multiple years away from the majors Schuelke is not fantasy relevant right now in anything but potentially those deep 30 team dynasty leagues.
It was an absolute blast to watch Cam Schuelke pitch and I hope I get the chance to watch him pitch live again!
