Of all the articles written for the site over the past several weeks, this is probably the most volatile position grouping. Can we really predict with any reliability which of these pitchers will be getting saves or sticking around for holds over the next three years? Probably not, but I will make a few predictions about which players who I think have the best shot to maintain fantasy relevance going forward.

Prediction 1: Mason Montgomery will be the closer for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pick him up now for the holds, and reap the saves later. Just look at his in-zone contact rates and overall swinging strike rates, and you’ll see that he misses bats. Although I laugh at the thought of stashing relievers, I’ve had Montgomery stashed on rosters waiting for this opportunity. Don’t tell anyone, I don’t want to be laughed at.

Prediction 2: Although Riley O’Brien will share the closer role with JoJo Romero, they’re just keeping the seat warm for Tink Hence. I’ve been saying for years that Hence is destined for the bullpen, and I have suffered the slings and arrows of Cardinals fans, but I’m not wrong this time. (Yes, I’m aware that Hence is not ranked, and I’m using O’Brien’s space to make this point, file complaints below).

Prediction 3: All three of the Tigers’ three-headed monster are in this group (Kenley Jansen, Kyle Finnegan, Will Vest), and in SVH leagues it’s Will Vest who will emerge as most valuable to fantasy managers.

Prediction 4: A pitcher on a poor team will rack up a disproportionate number of saves because poor teams only win close games. That pitcher will not be Victor Vodnik. He gives up far too much contact for a closer, especially in Colorado.
