THE DYNASTY GURU’S PLAYERS TO AVOID: SECOND BASE

Which players are we avoiding this year, and why?  Are they over-valued, playing in a difficult environment, or on the precipice of a steep decline?  Whatever the reason, the Dynasty Guru writers have identified a few players whom we are avoiding.

Brandon Lowe (Age: 31 Rank: 11)

Brandon Lowe comes off a terrific season in 2025 for the second baseman.  His season and his 11.5 million salary, led the Tampa Bay Rays to trade him to the Pirates this past winter. Lowe possesses top home run power at the position. He led all 2B in home runs and RBI’s last season. So why would I not want him this season? Well, “WATTS THE DEAL”?

Price. Lowe is coming off a terrific year, and his price has risen to around a 10th-round fantasy draft choice or even earlier. That price is wrong……

Consider his ranking last year was 28th at The Dynasty Guru. He was practically free. Why was he practically free last season, but so high this season?

Injuries. Lowe arrived at the majors in 2018. Since that time, he has only completed two full seasons: one in 2021, where he arguably was a top 40 fantasy player and the top fantasy 2B, and you guessed it, last season. When healthy, he is a top fantasy talent at the position. The problem is he really hasn’t been. The litany of injuries has been damaging to his fantasy value. For those reasons, I am out on Brandon Lowe this season. If you have him in your dynasty teams, it’s a great time to sell high.

Brice Turang (Age: 26 Rank: 3)

Who is Brice Turang? In 2024  he said, “I just took your base,” with 50 stolen bases. In 2025, he had half of that, but he busted out with 18 home runs. The last two seasons have been interesting for him. “WATTS THE DEAL”?

Brice Turang came to Milwaukee as a first round pick via the 2018 draft. He spent the next five seasons in the minor leagues. That culminated with his finest season in 2022 at Triple-A Nashville. He had a .286 avg, 34 SB, and 90 runs. In 2023, he got promoted to the big leagues, where he struggled mightily, but showcased his speed with 34 stolen bases.

Delving into 2025, we thought Turang would be great for runs, average, and stolen bases. He did exactly that, but he gave more power than expected. So, what gives? Bat speed and approach were the two most common reasons people point to. While both are true, I am not so sure that’s sustainable. Let’s look at his homerun totals month by month.

April – 2
May – 1
June – 1
July – 1
August – 10
September – 2

Doesn’t that look like a player who just got hot at the right time? It happens. Miguel Andujar got red hot for the Reds last season (he boosted my fantasy team for a little bit), then he cooled off and I dropped him back in the pool. While Turang is not Andujar, he’s not the next coming of Kyle Schwarber either. Turang’s bat speed in 2025 was only 27%, compared to the 98% of Schwarber. The year prior, Turang posted a whopping 2%. That doesn’t scream power hitter to me, does it to you?

Let me be clear, I do really like Brice Turang the fantasy player. I still expect him to provide Avg, Runs, and SB. I don’t believe the power is sustainable, which I might be an outlier on. He’s currently going in the 3rd round in drafts, and that’s just way too high for me. I’ve seen guys like Zach Neto, Bryce Harper, and Wyatt Langford to name a few get taken after him.  That’s just nuts to me.  Give me Nico Hoerner in round 8 or later, please.
