THE DYNASTY GURU PROSPECT SPOTLIGHT: SHORTSTOPS 1 – 25 – Juan Sanchez
Juan Sanchez, Toronto Blue Jays, DSL, Rank: 23
The Toronto Blue Jays have had an up and down experience recently with their J15 international player signings the last few years. To that point, they just released their top prospect from the 2022 class, Luis Meza. On the flip side of their mixed experiences over the last few years has been Juan Sanchez kicking down the door and flying up the rankings, which took just one season in the Dominican Summer League (DSL) to get the ball rolling. It has kept going and going and going, like the energizer bunny attached to a golden nugget.
Sanchez was signed during the 2025 J15 international class out of Cotui, Dominican Republic by the Toronto Blue Jays. He is already 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds as an 18-year-old. He possesses a fast swing speed, great hands, and the ability to get the ball into the air already. In the 2025 season in the DSL, he put up gaudy numbers for a 17-year-old. He smashed baseballs routinely and ended the year with a slash line of .341/.439/.565, ultimately being one of the top hitters there, despite his young age. He launched eight home runs, 16 doubles, and four triples over 56 games. His ground ball rate was just 36.8% and he managed to only strike out 17.4% of the time, showing great bat-to-ball skills. His walk rate was 10.3% also, as he displayed a willingness to take a walk if need be. All of this came together with a special wRC+ on the season of 156. Every which way you want to look at it, he was one of the best hitters down on the island.
What might have been even more extraordinary was Sanchez’s numbers jumped up to another level in the last 14 games of the season. He really settled in and it resulted in a slash line of .423/.483/.712, with an OPS of 1.194, and nine extra base hits to just 11 strikeouts. He finished those 14 games with a magnificent wRC+ of 198. Blue Jays fans will be patiently waiting for his stateside debut in 2026 and will hope to see an 18-year-old that is well on his way to being a top 25 overall prospect. He has the bat speed, the frame, the raw strength, hits the ball in the air, projects great physically, has a lot of room to grow still, doesn’t strike out a lot, and bat-to-ball skills already showing with in-game power. It is a profile fans dream of becoming reality and which the ceiling is reached. Passing the DSL test is a great start, next is an outstanding stateside debut in the pipeline, which will do wonders on pushing toward that outcome for Sanchez. He could be the next great international prospect for the Toronto Blue Jays and it may have already begun.
