THE DYNASTY GURU’S 2024 PLAYERS TO TARGET: OUTFIELDERS

This is a companion piece to our 2024 Dynasty League Rankings. The opinions below are my own and do not reflect the TDG consensus.

MIKE TROUT, LOS ANGELES ANGELS OF ANAHEIM (AGE: 32, RANK: 16)

I love it when guys I’ve appreciated from afar (roster them on zero teams) come into my price range. Example #1, Mike Trout. I’ve acquired him on two Dynasty teams this off-season at the lowest price in years. Trout was hotly debated in the rankings, and he is now our #16 overall OF, behind the future star quadruplet of Michael Harris II, Jordan Walker, Jackson Chourio, and Wyatt Langford. In a startup dynasty draft, one would be hard-pressed, even in win-now mode, to take Trout before any of those four, and I wouldn’t either. In our recent TDG Dynasty draft, chocked full of TDG writers (including yours truly) Trout was picked in the fifth round (74th overall) while the others were picked at least three rounds earlier.

In NFBC leagues, at least check, Trout was being drafted at an ADP of 70; there’s value there, and especially if he’s healthy for 450ish at-bats. A repeat of his 2022 season, where he went 85/40/80/1 with an OBP of .369 is definitely in the cards, the question is, how high is your risk tolerance? At his current ADP, and since you don’t have to pay first-round prices anymore, why not take a chance?

ELOY Jiménez, CHICAGO WHITE SOX (AGE: 27, RANK: 126)

Simply a value play. This is the first year that Eloy can provide a positive return on the draft pick/trade cost; why his hype was so strong through last season, I couldn’t tell you. Now, he’s being picked at an average ADP of 219 in NFBC leagues though in some leagues (like NFBC) Eloy only qualifies at UTIL (though he did play 14 games in right field in 2023). We have him ranked at 126, and as I see it, right behind a dozen players he should easily outperform. The White Sox have to be better, and that should lead to more R + RBI chances and 25 homers should be expected. Coming off his healthiest season since 2019, the White Sox finally figured out how to keep Eloy off the defensive grass, and this season, us risk-takers out here in fantasyland should be the beneficiaries.

PARKER MEADOWS, DETROIT TIGERS (AGE: 24, RANK: 59)

Meadows is a great one, especially in leagues that start four or more outfielders. Meadows has a current NFBC ADP of 305, and our internal 59 ranking (which was actually improved based on a number of writers going to bat for him in the rankings discussions). To quote our own Ryan Epperson “a legit 20/20 bat” and even with the increase in steals, we still love our 20/20 guys in fantasy. Currently penciled in as the leadoff hitter in a (possibly) solid Detroit lineup that should take a step forward (the possible), which would up his Runs numbers considerably. Would a 100/20/60/20 season be out of the question? I don’t think so, and at his current draft and ranking price, Meadows is worth taking the gamble on.

DRUW JONES, ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (AGE: 20, RANK: 94)

You may notice a theme, going after value plays, right? Jones was taken top two last year in every FYPD draft, and now he’s worthless? Injuries definitely got him down throughout the first two-thirds of 2023, but let’s look at that the first third, shall we? In 71 at-bats Jones slashed .296/.412/.437 with a couple of homers and six steals. If he had produced that line with the prorated homers (13) and steals (40) you would have a guy still in the top-100 of Dynasty ball players. I’ve been making inquiries and you might be surprised at how many of his current managers are ready to move on. Send out a reasonable offer and see if you can’t add Jones the Younger to your Dynasty team.
