2018 Dynasty Baseball Rankings

The Top 500 Dynasty Baseball Players for OBP Leagues, February 2018

Everybody – RANKS, RANKS, RANKS-RANKS-RANKS! Today we go 500 deep, on base flavored. The Dynasty Guru, Bret Sayre, posts his Top 500 later this month so don’t forget to … hey, where are you going? Get back here! Bret may be the dynasty guru, but I am at least a dynasty guru.

I highly recommend comparing these ranks to Bret’s next week, if only to note where the biggest risers are in the OBP format. So much of the dynasty analysis available to us is for standard formats, which is tough for those of us who love to learn from talented dynasty players, but also represents an opportunity to identify under and overvalued assets.

Right off the top you’ll notice that my top 10 features two players who can’t drink legally in the United States slotted ahead of proven young stars such as Mookie Betts, Corey Seager and Manny Machado. As I stated in my piece, “Tank to Win: My Rotowire Dynasty Invitation Draft,” not all top overall dynasty prospects are created equally. Acuna is differentiated, even among special prospects, and he just happens to be coming of age along with another differentiated OBP prospect in Vladimir Guerrero Jr. In my opinion, Acuna is the best dynasty prospect to come along since the two players at the top of this list.

Is Devon Travis a non-starter now?

    • February 23, 2018 at 9:14 am

I think he’s toast. I owned him last year, so I’m aware of what he can do when he is healthy and gets hot, but I don’t think his knees will allow him to play baseball enough.

Tom, you seem like a nice person but this list is pretty bad. Way too many young pups who haven’t done anything. Jorge Mateo in the top 100? Good lord.

    • February 23, 2018 at 9:24 am

Sam – your criticism is not unfamiliar as I am often the high guy on a lot of younger / unproven players in our internal consensus rankings, too. Here’s what I’d say in bullet point form.

      – Last year I couldn’t believe that people wanted to rank Posey and Lucroy ahead of Gary Sanchez. I was told Lucroy was proven and Sanchez was risky. Ditto Trea Turner (his BABIP will regress!) who I wanted to rank ahead of Dozier and Cano last year.
      – There’s risk associated with unproven players, but if you wait until the special kids are proven to be both better and younger, it’s too late, in my experience.
      – To be frank, this is the philosophy I employ when I compete against other industry and TDG writers… and I win, often by a lot, very frequently. (See, I am not that nice after all!)

As for Mateo, specifically – Billy Hamilton is a mediocre or poor real life baseball player who finished 40th overall on the ESPN player rater last year despite missing games and providing value in only two categories. If Mateo becomes a regular, which I believe he will be by end of the year, he’s that as an infielder (only he can actually hit and take a walk). I’ll grant you he is unlikely to be Billy Hamilton-fast.

        February 23, 2018 at 5:33 pm

In the office we used a frame by frame timer on an inside the park homer of Mateos from the year prior, It was 13.7 which would be the fastest inside the park home run ever recorded when compared to statcast data. So it’s very fair to view him as a source of monstrous steal totals in the future, and if you believe he’s making the majors he’ll likely be more impactful than Hamilton already is with the bat. Pair all of that with him being an infielder and his rank doesn’t seem strange at all.

Are your “expert” league results posted anywhere? You say you win often (and I don’t doubt that you do), so I’m curious if you have all your results anywhere.

        • February 25, 2018 at 1:12 pm

In nine seasons across two industry leagues I’ve finished first four times, second twice and third once. Just joined a new third one (RDI) this offseason. They’re just regular Cbs leagues so I don’t think you can view results without being in the league.

Also, if this is OBP based how the hell is Odor at 85?

    • February 23, 2018 at 9:26 am

I still have Odor as a (back end) top 50 OBP bat for 2018. Top 50 bats who are as young as Odor is belong in my top 100 dynasty ranks. I totally understand if philosophically you can’t deal with that OBP, but he just had a nightmare season and finished 30/15. I could be convinced he belongs further back on this list if you think he’s more 2017 than 2015/2016 Odor. He’s tough to carry if you don’t have other OBP hogs to prop him up.

keepers Hader #483 Vizcaino #420 Matz #401 >> drops #290 Brantley #336 Martinez #287 Peraza . I agree with 80% of my roster ranks, but those 6 I’ve got issues with.

    • February 23, 2018 at 9:33 am

My conviction wanes the deeper the list goes.
      – Hader went 340th(ish) in the Rotowire Dynasty Invitational I participated in, so you’re not alone in that particular opinion. What am I missing? Why should I care about a reliever who slumped in the minors are a starter?
      – Vizcaino I don’t think is long for the role, personally.
      – Matz… surely you can’t blame a dynasty owner for moving on. It’s likely due to the health issues, but I think the talent-when-healthy is overstated. Perhaps like Devon Travis, the arm?
      – I have a life long shoulder injury, so perhaps I should know better than to trust Brantley to stay healthy at all, but I think his talent when healthy has been forgotten too quickly.
      – Jose Martinez was an absolute monster last year when he got a chance to play. Is he a platoon bat? Probably. But also there’s a decent chance he can pop and become this year’s Pham. Bret will be over 100 spots lower on him later this week.
      – I don’t really want to defend Peraza. I own zero shares, but I can’t write off a guy with 47 steals in 800 PA personally.

      • mtneer99
        February 23, 2018 at 10:17 am

Thanks I enjoyed your comments, my counter on Peraza is .621 OPS that’s a horrible red flag for me regardless of SBs. It’s more personal faith in Hader’s starter potential, and Matz injury rebound.
I can’t keep Martinez’s platoon bat, and I’ve lost all hope in Brantley.

Acuna and Vlad over Seager, Machado, Betts, Goldschmidt!!!

    • Patty
      February 23, 2018 at 9:43 am

and the “!!!” weren’t meant to mean, “wow that’s great!” They were more of a, “this can’t be real!”

I think we all know the scouting reports on these young guys….but history is littered with busts- BJ Upton, Jason Heyword, Jesus Montero, Domonic Brown, Matt Wieters, Jay Bruce, Delmon Young.

You may be thinking that these busts were never supposed to be as good as Acuna and Vlad….but they were, it’s astonishing how good their scouting reports were and how they did not even come close to that.

Taking a Vlad or Acuna over Seager, Machado, Betts, Goldschmidt is very risky, and frankly what is the reward? That they MAY become as good as one of those guys? common lol

      • February 23, 2018 at 11:28 am

It’s a perfectly reasonable opinion, but as I stated in this piece, I disagree that *these* top prospects are indistinguishable from the disappointments of yesteryear. Go ahead and look at the performance of those guys when they were Vlad Jr’s and Acuna’s age. The closest was probably Heyward and he still falls short.

I also disagree with the “you’re only hoping X becomes Y!” If Vlad becomes Goldschmidt in terms of performance, then he’s Goldschmidt only 12 years younger. That’s much more valuable than the 30.5 year old version of Goldy.

As good as Seager, Machado and Betts are, they don’t have Vlad’s (.400 OBP) or Acuna’s upside (speed). The closest is Betts, but he doesn’t hit the ball as hard as I need to see from a player to consider them a true superduperstar.

    • February 23, 2018 at 9:43 am

Hopefully people won’t be yelling that at me for years to come!

Is anyone in a dynasty league where Acuna or Vlad can be had for Goldy? Machado / Betts / Seager I’d believe, but the answer is no in my experience for Acuna and Vlad is more 50/50.

      • Patty
        February 23, 2018 at 9:51 am

You mean that in your experience, you would not be able to trade for Acuna or Vlad if you were to offer Machado/Betts/Seager?

        • February 23, 2018 at 10:26 am

Right. For example, I offered two of Sale / Kluber for Acuna in TDGX and was rejected, no counter or willingness to discuss. I offered MadBum and Kluber + for Vlad and was rejected in industry Devil’s Rejects.

They’re godfather offer types-only at this point, basically.

      • Kyle
        February 28, 2018 at 9:16 am

Actually trying to work on a deal now. I have Goldy and was trying to work this trade: Goldy and Dee Gordon for Devers, Severino, and Torres. He was on the fence but he also has vlad and seems more open to switching Vlad for Devers in that deal. What do you think I should offer?

        • February 28, 2018 at 9:26 am

I’m much higher on Vlad than Goldy, so if you can swap him in that specific trade seems sensible to me although I don’t know your league’s format. Goldy should have many really good years left, but it’s possible the run of f’awesome years is over with humidor + age taking away some steals. The steals could really crash at any moment without notice.

  6. February 23, 2018 at 10:10 am

You’d really decline a Machado for Vlad Jr offer straight up if Machado’s owner proposed it to you right now?

I own Vlad Jr and I’m not saying you’re wrong (time will tell, and I hope you’re right)… this definitely makes me re-think his value to my team though.

    • February 23, 2018 at 10:27 am

If I were a contender, I would probably prefer Machado one for one, but I think Vlad is the better dynasty asset for OBP.

Tom, I really appreciate the website and all the rankings. I especially appreciate how you all tend to go out on a limb with your rankings. Then, back it up with sound reasoning even though they are opinions.

If I want watered down industry average rankings, I’ll go to fantasypros. I find your site to have the most value though. It helped me net Acuna and Devers last season.

You can count on me to continue donating. Cheers!

Love the site and your rankings. I’m drafting minor leaguers this weekend and I expect he’ll go early. I just want to confirm your Hays ranking is correct as posted as he looks to be about your 105th ranked prospect. Roche and Sayer have him much higher. I’m more than happy to pass on him, just want to ensure I’m reading you correctly on him.

    • February 23, 2018 at 3:30 pm

I don’t like him, generally, but surely Bret and Roche would fade him for OBP lesgues. He doesn’t walk. That’s a big deal.

    • February 23, 2018 at 3:50 pm

I love Austin Hays, but in OBP-leagues, he should drop. He only had a 4.3% walk rate last year. For context, only 7 qualifying hitters walked less in the majors last year. As Bret notes in his rankings, Hays possess Adam Jones upside without the stolen bases. I personally would rank Hays higher than Tom in OBP-leagues; right around Adam Jones actually.

I recently selected Hays at 165 overall in an OBP dynasty draft (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-1m_XF-AhUwFg-O3FzxVsfyAxgSeU3OlNU5egC5hVe0/edit?ts=5a5a9f66#gid=0). Of course, I selected him partially to emphasis my love of him among our fellow writers, but I still value him highly, even in OBP.

No Foltynewicz but guys like Nick Pivetta and James Kaprelian in there? I can see that a lot of work and thought went into this, and it is a great resource overall. Thanks TT!

    • February 23, 2018 at 4:39 pm

I stand by that. It’s also consistent with the industry startup (RDI) I participated in where folty went around pick 600.

    • February 23, 2018 at 5:14 pm

Really like kaprelian, though. Health risk? So is every arm! He’s the cheapest maybe ace I know of.

Is Daniel Murphy’s low rating more due to his knee concerns this year or that he may not sign with the Nats after this year? If the latter hasn’t he proven he’s still an elite hitter at this point? I don’t see him signing into a bad situation

    • February 23, 2018 at 8:48 pm

I don’t consider low 100’s a low ranking. That’s pretty darn high for a 33-year-old who doesn’t run at all anymore.
I do think our staff rankings were too high on him. Why is he not even higher? It’s mostly age / lack of steals. Not too worried about his FA status nor his ability to be a really good hitter in the next year or two.
I don’t expect him to do what he did last year. By day I work for mlb and get to chat with Tango and Mike Petriello about Statcast and Murphy is in for some negative regression.

For that matter, so is Altuve. “He had a career year.” – Petriello, yesterday. I asked him about the massive discrepancy between his xwoba and wOBA. Tango’s latest tweaks xwoba don’t explain that difference… they think it’s luck.

Wow, what an entirely unsolicited tangent! Sorry… couldn’t help it.

Thanks for the reply. Am new to this site and love it so far. Going to donate since it’s important to support great content!

If you guys rank relief pitchers it would be great if you could do a list that includes Holds. I’m in a very deep league with Holds and an IP limit of 1450 so it’s a bit tough to judge. We can only keep 9 and I’m drafting last since I won last year. Keeping Machado/Judge/Gordon/Edwin/Happ/D Murphy/Thor/Robbie Ray/K Jansen but also have Andrew Miller and Arch Bradley who I plan to cut. Loved having Miller last year just don’t see how I can keep him over those guys, but I feel one of my first snake picks (16th/17th) needs to be an elite k/9 setup man and a 2nd closer. Closers go off the board like crazy with our draft starting in the 10th round and the elite guys kept

Sorry for the long post! But yea a RP list with saves and Holds as two individual categories in mind would be cool. And I feel more Roro leagues should use Holds. Adds layer of difficulty since you can’t just nab closers when guys get hurt or lose their jobs

    • February 28, 2018 at 3:43 pm

Well congratulations to you! That’s quite a get, although others like Santana more than I do. I’m worried about his lack of defensive value cutting into PT. Would like him more in the AL.

What are your thoughts on Chris Owings? I was surprised to see that a 34-year-old Jed Lowrie (who went undrafted in my 690-deep OBP dynasty draft this year) made the list but Owings did not. Humidor? Or are you just out on Owings?

    • March 6, 2018 at 10:42 pm

I think it’s reasonable criticism and I don’t remember if I consciously omitted him or not, but he probably belongs somewhere at the end of the 400’s with those wheels. On the other hand, I do think this is the last year that he’s relevant and I think it’s fair to say I am out on him. Fast players can beat their xStats, but he hit the ball like Erick Aybar, the park change is very real.

Would you trade Vlad Jr. for Adam Eaton Jr. and pick 1/1 in a 20 team dynasty league H2H points league? Contending this year and Eaton would slot as a reserve OF. Not sure about the strength of the draft (we draft the week after the real draft happens). League uses LF, CF, RF designation. 17 minor slots. I have strong pitching.

    Rizzo/Hosmer @ 1B
    Machado at 3B
    J Upton @ LF
    Blackmon @ CF
    Harper @ RF

Have Rodgers in minors slot and floated the idea of Rodgers for Eaton & 1/1 and this was the proposal sent to me.
