2017 Dynasty Baseball RankingsDynasty Baseball

The *Other* Top 500 Dynasty Baseball Rankings, March 2017

I’ll make it clear off the top – these aren’t the Official Dynasty Guru Top 500 Rankings. But you’re already here, aren’t you? So stay a while and make yourself at home. Comment about where I’m wrong, won’t you? Bret’s rankings aren’t going anywhere. Besides, who has ever said, “I don’t need to see these rankings – I’ve already seen another?”

You’ll notice as compared to the consensus positional dynasty rankings and even Bret Sayre’s top 500 that I tend to skew younger. For those of you who found it unfathomable that Troy Tulowitzki could be ranked ahead of Trevor Story you’ll likely find this list cathartic. On the other hand, if you’re someone who would never rank Gary Sanchez ahead of Buster Posey (as I have) until Sanchez “proves it,” then you might not agree with this particular list. (Ditto Bregman over Seager, etc.) I also tend to fade pitchers a little more than most – this is my fourth dynasty top 500 (I used to post them on MLB.com) and I’ve yet to rank a pitcher in any top ten.

We hope that you have enjoyed the countless hours of hard work that went into these rankings and continue to support The Dynasty Guru by showing your appreciation through this link or via the splendid ‘donate’ button located on the right-hand side of the homepage. Donations of any size are greatly appreciated and they are the reason why we can do this and put it all out there for free.

Hi Tom, GREAT job on the list. Thanks for doing this. We all appreciate it

I have a question for you. This is the closest I’ve seen JD Martinez and Strasburg ranked. The reason I bring it up is that I was offered Stras in a trade for JD.

I’m in a deep 12-team H2H keep forever league. We keep 20 MLB guys and have a 12 round draft (144 picks) each year. We draft the 2016 draftees and scrubs who didn’t make the keeper cut.

    The scoring categories are:
R H HR RBI SB BB K TB AVG OPS and IP QS W ERA WHIP SV+HLD HRA K/9 K/BB

I want to improve my pitching. I received a trade offer where I trade JDMart for
Strasburg + the 6th overall pick

    At OF I have – Thames/Pollock/JD/Cruz/Bautista/Broxton/Conforto (we start a LF/CF/RF+2OF)
    At SP I have – Arrieta/Greinke/Hill/Lackey/Gsellman + Allen/Miller/Diaz@ RP

Keep JD for depth or grab risky Stras? Which side would you want? Your rankings seem to suggest I should take the chance on Strasburg…

    • March 8, 2017 at 11:02 am

I’m going to ignore your categories, because I’m no good at “converting” value outside of standard format, but that strikes me as a sensible trade to make if you need pitching. I do have a very firm preference of JD Martinez, but + pick 1.6 means the value is there and the utility is there, too.

    • March 10, 2017 at 3:46 am

Keep JD. Your outfield would take a serious hit. Pitching is hard to predict and Strasburg is an injury time bomb waiting to explode and unravel your whole season. At least that’s what I would do. Besides, your pitching is good enough.

Tom we think alike. This list is more where I’m at in the overall rankings. Great job and thanks for taking the time to put this together.

    • March 8, 2017 at 11:01 am

Word. It’s certainly more in line with the *prices* I’ve seen. Whether these are “correct” is subjective. I don’t necessarily go crazy for prospects, but if you’re a very good prospect that has also flashed productivity in the Majors (Mazara, Benintendi, Sanchez, etc.) I’m not going to wait for that player to become fully proven to buy in, because then you never have access to next gen superstars.

The hope is you get more Corey Seager’s and Lindors than Puig and Solers (young players that flashed and then locked in that value vs. lost value).

I often hear that Sanchez types have too much risk to rank them this highly, but Troy Tulowitzki was “proven” and showed that veterans also have risk associated with holding them too long.

Great job on the list. I would like to see a list that included International, College, & High School players in it. We play in a 16 team Dynasty Keeper League, and you can draft pretty much anybody.

    • March 8, 2017 at 9:52 pm

I play in such a league with Bret. It’d be challenging for me to make such a list and not sure how many other crazies are out there. I have four 2028 ama kids on my team… Turang, Kelesic… kelenic? Forget.

You should join the fb group and crowd source Q’s related to that format.

Thanks, how about Charlie Tilson as a replacement name? As we saw Milwaukee last year, bad teams often let their players run wild.

    Love these lists! Thank you.

One list I rarely see that would be particularly useful would be a 1st year player top 50 or 100 that includes previous year draftees, international signees etc. in a dynasty context.

Anything like that in the works? Could it be?

    • March 9, 2017 at 2:39 pm

I would be surprised if such a list doesn’t exist next year.

We’re currently doing a top 200 fantasy prospects that we will release soon.

  7. March 9, 2017 at 3:04 pm

Two people I’ve been drafting that aren’t on this list, because they’re more deep league, probability guys – Max Schrock and Shedrick Long. Easily could have been in 400-500 range.

  8. March 9, 2017 at 3:36 pm

Now this is a list that I can agree with (for the most part)!

Trevor Story, shockingly, clocks in at #43 and Tulo is at #141. Amazing! Shocking! Unbelievable!

I also appreciate your aggressiveness with some younger players like Benintendi and Urias. I’m a little skeptical of Nomar Mazara at #31 based on his second half fade. However, I can’t fully disagree with you there either.

Love the list. Much more in line with how dynasty is meant to be played. Well done Tom.

12 team H2H 8×8 dynasty. 14 keepers. Definitely keeping Goldy, Dozier, Seager, Frazier, Dahl, Trout, Springer, Sano, Mazara, J. Baez, Carrasco, G.Cole… Now I need to pick 2 of these 4: Betances (Holds is a category), Edwin diaz, Kevin Gausman, Tyler Glasnow. Just curious who you would keep, I think I have my 2, but curious to hear another opinion or two.

    • March 10, 2017 at 12:13 am

I’d be keeping Diaz and Gausman. I’m not saying Betances isn’t worth keeping because he is, especially with the other categories he impacts over the entire season. But, in a week-to-week H2H league, his impact is really just one category (holds), maybe two with strikeouts. I think that tips the scales to an improving Gausman. He’ll give you 6-12 innings a week impact. Glasnow may not even be in the rotation for the Pirates, so he’s an easy dump.

It looks like you’ve still got Anderson Espinoza listed on Boston.

  12. March 10, 2017 at 12:18 am

Lance Lynn at #350? This guy was highly successful and a workhorse before the TJS. I expect him to come back and be the same guy, much like Waino did after his TJS. Why no Lance Lynn from the Tomster?
