The Top 500 Dynasty League Overall Ranks, May 2013 Update

He who is resistant to change is destined to perish.

On one hand, it’s so simple. The whole off-season we build value-based mausoleums around all of these players, as time stands still long enough for us to construct them. But the only problem with that is that these players are not dead–they are, in fact, very alive. As as soon as you think you’ve built the perfect chamber, with statistics and narratives covering the walls, things begin to change. Quickly. And as dynasty league owners, it’s even more important to separate the signal from the noise when it comes to early season performance. If we wait too long to notice real changes, or if we refuse to accept the ones which are in front of us, it can derail a team off its course for years. So it’s in our best interest not to have static valuations, and part of that comes from placing a higher value on current season production. The future is great, but current production is king. So when Jose Reyes is out for two months, not only does his redraft league value go down, but his dynasty value does as well. Just not as much, since it’s unlikely to be something that will affect him long-term.

The risers on this list are sure to catch your attention, and in fact, there are 20 players who have jumped more than 100 spots in the rankings (including those who weren’t ranked in the top-500 last time around. Many are names which will not surprise you, like Carlos Gomez, Chris Davis and Josh Donaldson–but the important thing to note is that they are based on skill-set improvements which can be sustainable. On the other hand, you’ll find 17 players who dropped 100 spots or more, and those are even easier to spot. The vast majority of these are either older pitchers who have undergone surgery or players (closers-slash-otherwise) who have lost their roles. You won’t find healthy players drop very far based solely on performance, except in extreme circumstances. That tends to be more of a slow burn.

The Top 500 Dynasty League rankings are intended to be a snapshot of current value, as all rankings are. The list I’m posting today will look different than the one I’d post next Wednesday or the Wednesday after that. And after this ranking, I will put out another at the half-way point of the season, and the final 2013 list will come out in mid-August. Additionally, there will be a brand new Podcast For Your Eyes coming out tomorrow where Ben, Craig and I talk about these rankings in greater detail.

Finally, with the new rankings comes a reminder. If you’re enjoying the rankings, and all of the other work here at The Dynasty Guru, I hope that you will make a donation to show your support for the site. As a non-subscription site, this is how you can help make sure we’re still around at this time next year, producing the best dynasty league content we can. You can do that through this link, or by clicking the “Donate” button on the top-right corner of the homepage. All donations are truly appreciated.

And now what you came here for, the updated Top 500 list — as of May 15, 2013:

I picked up Donaldson during Spring Training after reading your thoughts on him and hve been reaping the benefits ever since. He fits nicely into my CI spot, a quick question though, my current 3rd baseman is Moose but I have been approached about trading Moose for Alvarez straight up. The league is a 14 tm dynasty league thats a 6×6 league that counts OBP and OPS. Thoughts?

Again thanks for all that you guys do.

I still prefer Moustakas to Alvarez. I’ve been at the forefront of the Alvarez hate (with good reason I think). I’m not particularly optimistic on Moustakas, but I still think he’s better than Alvarez long term.

It’d be nice to have a list of players who dropped out of your top 500, possibly including their prior ranking if easily accessible.

Thanks for the update. I was interested in seeing how injuries and quick starts had affected them, notably Gomez and Dylan Bundy.

Is Freeman still a replacement level 1B? Also is Cargo a good comp to Starling Marte? Seems like K’s don’t deter his production.

    • May 15, 2013 at 2:39 pm

As the guy who was pushing the “Freddie Freeman isn’t any better than a lot of other guys” bandwagon, I’ll own up to the fact that Freddie has been great so far. I still maintain my theory, but he’s obviously doing extremely well and it’s going to be harder to stand that ground. All that said – I think we all acknowledged that in a deep league or dynasty format, Freeman was a very good value and worth far more than replacement level. That type of talk was more for 10-12 team leagues, and he’s been better than I anticipated there as well.

Once again, I’ve never been a Starling Marte guy. I think he’s gotten off to a great start, but will come back to earth in a big way. It’s been my thought that his approach will drag down all his other abilities, and while it hasn’t thus far…we’re 5 weeks into a long season. Additionally, his stolen base rate is way up and not at all in line with career numbers. I would expect that to regress as well. All that said, if this IS the real Marte, you’re looking at a fantasy monster. You just have to decide if you believe.

Miguel Almonte. What do you like about him? I don’t see a lot about him on the web.

    • May 15, 2013 at 4:06 pm

I’m a big Miguel Almonte fan, and will be including him in my next batch of deep dive prospects. Jason Parks recently wrote that he saw Almonte in the same discussion as that of fellow Royal Kyle Zimmer. Almonte throws in the mid 90s with some wiggle, and has a monster change up. He’s working on finding a workable breaking ball (throws both, but not much dominance out of either). He’s very raw, but there’s a lot of promise in him. One of my sleepers for sure.

So now i can trade joey bats for machado this year?

    • May 15, 2013 at 4:09 pm

Probably going to be a big dropoff in home runs, but overall production should be similar.

@Craig Goldstein, when do you think is the right time to move a guy like Choo(31 in july) and Alex Gordon(30 in Feb) in a dynasty, when do you think their skills start to diminish, also if you where proposed Jose Fernandez for Starling Marte in order to then be able to flip Fernandez for Freeman & Buckholz, would you do it? I have David Ortiz at 1B, but have been offered Max Fried & Noah Syndengaard for him, which i could then cover with Freeman. My OF is currently J Upton, A. Gordon and Choo. Marte covers my UTIL spot along with Parra, and have Profar and Rendon waiting in the wings to take over UTIL once they come up.

    • May 15, 2013 at 5:48 pm

Honestly, Choo and Gordon are the type of guys I expect to age well. I think in dynasty leagues older players are undervalued, PARTICULARLY players like Choo and Gordon who should remain valuable into their mid 30s. I would probably look to move then in their age 34 seasons, as I don’t think they’ll be properly valued until then, if then.

As to the trade, I hate making trades with the anticipation of trading a guy later, but if it’s something that is already set up, I see where you’re coming from. You’re essentially trading Marte for Freeman/Buchholz, with I would do. I don’t know that I’d move Ortiz for Fried and Syndergaard if I’m contending, but the value is definitely there, though you’re absorbing a TON of risk in two players that are years from the big leagues. That doesn’t mean don’t do it, it just needs to be accounted for. You are going to lose a bit of offense in the Util spot, but you add some nice minors depth, while only downgrading from Ortiz to Freeman and Marte to Parra while adding Buchholz. It all works for me.

In first in first year dynasty 5×5 by nearly 30 pts. Okay to trade Cutch for Cano? Really only lagging in AVG

    • May 15, 2013 at 8:03 pm

As far as I’m concerned I’d trade McCutchen for Cano in a second. I don’t want to answer for Bret, but he’s got Cano ahead in his rankings, so I’d guess he would agree.

i give fernandez and cobb and get jose reyes. good deal?

    • May 17, 2013 at 11:11 am

I’m not a fan of this deal. Reyes injury history worries me and Fernandez is incredibly valuable in a dynasty with now and future value. Add in Cobb’s value if it’s a deep league? I’d hold.

Man Addison Russell has been bad. Okay to trade for Yonder?

    • May 17, 2013 at 11:12 am

Russell is 19 and playing in Hi-A. He’s also been a little better after a terrible start. There’s no way I’d trade him for Yonder Alonso if you believed in him 6 weeks ago. He’s still a top 10 prospect for me next year.

i have Machado and Longo, not a horrible problem, but we have no UT spot. does MM stick at third? or is JJ Hardy moving for him? i don’t mind having them both for a while, but I can’t waste a roster spot for the next 3 seasons with 1 of them on the bench. do you see Max Fried as a potential ace or more of a 2/3 starter? thanks

    • May 27, 2013 at 8:32 am

I think there’s a better than 50/50 chance he gets that eligibility back. And if he does, it will be because Hardy walks next year. As for Fried, I think he’s likely a solid #2 starter, but I will not rule out the potential for him to become an ace down the line.

Hi! Out of curiousity, I’m currently in #1 spot for my H2H 12 team, 30 MLB slots, 30 MILB slots, keepers league and looking to widen the distance and also compete for next few immediate years with a bit over half the season left.

I would say my top 10 MILB players are Taillon, Addison Russell, Carlos Martinez, A. Heaney, Mason WIlliams, Renato Nunez, Jorge Bonifacio, Nomar Mazara, Erik Johnson and Lucas Sims.

What would be a fair package if possible, for either Miguel Cabrera, Greinke or Weaver? The team that has each of these players isn’t competing at all and looking to sell.

    Thanks!

    • June 10, 2013 at 10:33 pm

I’d deal that entire farm system if I could get Miggy. If you’re looking for Greinke or Weaver, I’d offer Taillon and Williams. Or if you want to hold onto Taillon, I’d offer Martinez, Williams and a smaller third piece, like Mazara or Nunez.

        June 11, 2013 at 7:03 am

Haha, thanks for the speedy reply, I forgot one huge minor detail which was the reason why I asked in the first place….if I get MIggy, I only get him for the rest of this season and 2 more years afterwards, since that’s when his current contract ends in our league for good then he heads to FA. Weaver/Greinke only for 4 years.
